Perform a Random Act of Kindness this Holiday season as studies show that it’s good for your health!
Random acts of kindness have been scientifically shown to increase happiness and well-being. A number of studies have looked at the effect of committing random acts of kindness. In one recent study, participants who participated in acts of kindness for 6 weeks experienced increased levels of happiness and wellbeing by 41.66% compared to those that didn’t, who experienced a reduction in happiness. Acts of kindness included putting coins into a stranger’s parking meter, donating blood, helping someone with a problem or visiting someone who was sick.
Practice random acts of kindness
Try this exercise for yourself. One day each week perform 5 random acts of kindness. Be sure to take some time to notice what happens when you commit these acts of kindness. Record your actions and reflections in your journal. Here are some ideas to get you started:
In everyday life
- Let someone in front of you in the traffic or in a queue
- Open the door for someone
- Give someone the gift of your time
- Pay for a coffee for the person behind you
In the workplace
- Surprise someone with a snack, drink or coffee
- Give a compliment
- In your community
- Visit a retirement village
- Help you neighbour mow the lawn
- Organise a neighbourhood party
